The Queen Elizabeth II School caters for children, aged two to 19yrs, who have severe or profound and multiple learning difficulties. Bolt & Heeks were engaged to refurbish and extend the school, over four distinct phases as follows: (1) remodel and refurbish the kitchen block (2) extend and refurbish the admin/reception area (3) demolish the existing studio, and (4) construct a new standalone drama studio. The school was mindful of environmental considerations, hence the design included amongst other things SUDS paving, lambswool insulation and “intelligent” fully automated ventilation and underfloor heating
The construction of the drama studio called for extensive excavation as the ground beams were 2m below the surface to accommodate the Studio’s finished floor level of approx 1.4m below ground level.
As the school was in occupation throughout the works, our Site Manager liaised closely with the Bursar to schedule each week’s activities to minimise disruption or inconvenience; additionally, adjacent to the QEII School is Holly Lodge, another school catering for children with special needs and so our Site Manager also held liaison meetings with their Head Teacher. A robust traffic management plan was also applied for the duration of the contract.
"This was a huge project for us to take on as a small special school for children with severe and complex learning dificulties, but at all times mutual respect was evident between your team and our pupils and staff. We were particularly impressed with your site manager, Kevin Jones, who thoroughly embraced the culture of our school and worked closely with our school business manager to ensure that any potential difficulties or disruption were overcome with the minimum of fuss.We would have no hesitation in recommending Bolt & Heeks"
